As lawyer and Black feminist advocate Kimberle Crenshaw noted in her seminal essay “Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics,” there is a pressing need to work against the “single-axis framework” that ignores our multiple and hyphenated identities. An intersectional approach to anti-racism and gender equity “encourage(s) us to look beneath the prevailing conceptions of discrimination and to challenge....” The resulting aim “should be to facilitate the inclusion of marginalized groups for whom it can be said: "When they enter, we all enter."’
