BEGINNER

Grades 2-6 : A LITTLE HISTORY SCORE & CURRICULUM GUIDE

A Little History tells the simplified stories of nine legendary figures in Black history, from artists, to scientists, politicians, and more. Designed for solo, narrating violist with short, catchy poems set to music with audience interaction, it is a unique addition to a teaching artist's educational offerings. Visual enhancements, including portrait cards, a powerpoint presentation, and worksheets have been included to ensure that students see as well as hear A Little History in action. A Little History is meant to be performed for audiences of mostly elementary-aged children (grades 2-6), and can be easily adapted to fit a variety of educational purposes. Given the level of recall and writing involved, the worksheets are designed for upper elementary-aged students. The accompanying curriculum guide includes activities for learners, ages 6 through 11. With its buildable lesson units and relevance to other subjects, A Little History provides a rich context for music, Black history, social justice, and culture to be appreciated.

Designed for elementary/middle school string ensembles, Castle of our Skins' original compositions include an advanced string quartet part appropriate for high school or faculty performers. While all works are grounded in Classical music, each touches on different subjects such as history, social studies, and literature, making collaboration across academic subjects a possibility. The age-appropriate, companion curriculum, are rooted in Afrocentric pedagogical practices that emphasize experiential learning, group participation, aural skills, and individual creativity. Accompanying guides meet key Social Emotional Learning standards while creating informative and engaging experiences for both students and teachers. Grades 6-9 : VIDEO MEDIA SERIES & CURRICULUM GUIDES

With a particular focus on grades, 6-9, D-Composed's video series features a selection of composers across backgrounds, disciplines, and musical influences highlighting the breadth and depth of Black composers.

The companion curriculums allow both students and teachers to go even deeper in their exploration of compositions with complementary activities, prompts, and additional research that spark thought-provoking classroom discussion and personal reflection.  While the music spans time and genre, the social and cultural contexts of the pieces allow the guides for use across academic subjects such as art and social studies.

Content within the curriculum guides are designed for intermediate-grade-level discussion while performance videos add an engaging visual element suitable for all ages.

Completing the course means that students and educators can walk away understanding the multifaceted nature of the stories and influences of Black composers and the relevance of their works today.

ADVANCED/COLLEGIATE

Grades 9-12, Early College, and Beyond : DATABASE & CURRICULUM GUIDES

The curriculum guides and activity supplements are designed for learners of every skill level, with emphasis on students in grades 9-12,  early college, and beyond. They go beyond the music of the Western Classical canon to include folk songs, Spirituals, Jazz, Blues, and world music, provide vital social and historical context for each composer to create space for more inclusivity, and include interactive and self-reflective prompts pertaining to the composers and their works.

Complete repertoire resource lists for every composer are included, allowing teachers to learn new works and introduce previously unheard pieces by historic, non-living composers.

The database is designed for everyone–musicians, performers, conductors, students, researchers, educators, artistic administrators, and anyone with a curious mind–and provides access to thousands of works by women and gender-marginalized composers.  The catalogue features an array of filtering options and redirections towards primary resources to streamline your search process. Users will find a wealth of information about historical composers, including: links to composer websites and Wikipedia articles, notes on the composer, public domain images and photographs, and/or links to their works currently in the database. Information about works includes: links to scores (publisher and library access), audio and video recordings, and/or notes on relevant details such as text, authors, translations, and movement titles.
